Grocery Tip for the Solo Shopper

If you primarily shop for just yourself here is an easy way to save money at the grocery store.

I give you the One Basket Rule

The rule is simple, you can only buy what fits in the basket.  Tada!  Genius, right?  Just kidding, just kidding, but yeah, you can thank me later.

It's honestly a great rule, because it forces you to plan better for your week and you spend less since there's no room for junk food or impulse buys.  Less food goes to waste which also means more dollars in your pocket.

Of course you will see things you want and occasionally end up with a perilous balancing act, but try to stick to your list and plan meals.  If there is something you want or are hungry for, swap something out or remind yourself that there's always going to be a next week.

Like everything else in my life, there is an exception...  In addition to the One Basket Rule I sometimes give in to the One Hand Rule.  I can buy whatever will fit in my basket plus one hand... haha.  I usually save that special hand for a carton of milk or a frozen pizza - for those days I just can't get it together.  But if there is a reaaaaaaaally good sale on pizzas I will allow myself two.

  1. As someone that doesn't have a car, I usually have to stick to this rule. It's a good idea, because sometimes when I get too full of a basket, I find I still waste stuff! I think that if I can't carry it all on my back, then I probably bought way too much food for myself for the week. So, I start thinking about how I can get the most bang for my buck and back!

  2. Exactly!! I used to always bike to the grocery store and end up buying more than I could comfortably carry. Not fun, and just like you said stuff still gets wasted or goes bad.
